Cancer
Overview
When you hear the word cancer, it can be overwhelming. At TidalHealth, we know that staying close to home and loved ones is important, especially in times of a difficult diagnosis. Our team provides compassionate, comprehensive care from your diagnosis through follow-up. We offer a wide range of diagnostic and treatment options, including medical and radiation oncology, always using a team approach so the right specialists are working together to build a plan tailored to your needs.
Many patients who have walked this path before share how supported and cared for they felt — because at TidalHealth, you and your family truly matter.
If you want more information about specific types of cancer or the treatments we offer, our team is here to guide you. We are ready to listen and help make this journey as manageable as possible.

Diagnosis
Getting a cancer diagnosis is never easy, but the first step is making sure that diagnosis is clear and accurate. At TidalHealth, we are dedicated to providing quick, thorough answers so you and your family can make the best decisions moving forward.
How cancer is diagnosed
Diagnosis often begins with radiology. Imaging tests like mammograms or CT scans help doctors spot anything that doesn’t look right. Radiologists, who are trained to read these images, work closely with the rest of your care team.
If something unusual is found, the next step may be a biopsy. A biopsy involves taking a small sample of tissue to examine more closely under a microscope. Depending on the situation, this can be done in several ways, such as needle biopsies performed with ultrasound or CT guidance, or during procedures like a colonoscopy if a growth is detected.

Tests and procedures used
- CT scan: Uses X-rays to create detailed pictures inside the body.
- Spiral CT scan: Provides detailed images and helps detect small abnormal areas for diagnosis or treatment planning.
- MRI: Uses a magnetic field and radio waves to make images of organs and structures.
- Ultrasound: Uses sound waves to show what’s happening inside, helping determine the size and shape of soft tissues and organs.
- Bronchoscopy: Allows a doctor to look inside the throat, larynx, trachea and lower airways and remove small samples if needed.
- Endoscopic ultrasound–guided fine needle aspiration: Uses a thin needle to take samples from abnormal tissue.
- Mediastinoscopy: A surgical procedure to view the area between and in front of the lungs.
- Electromagnetic navigation bronchoscopy: Uses GPS-like technology to guide doctors to hard-to-reach spots in the lungs.
- Stereotactic (non-surgical) breast biopsies: Uses X-rays to guide a needle for sampling breast tissue.
- Ultrasound-guided (non-surgical) breast biopsies: Uses ultrasound to guide a needle for tissue sampling.
- Sentinel node location for biopsy: A surgical procedure to remove and examine lymph node tissue to check for cancer spread.
Throughout the diagnostic process we are committed to clear communication and caring support. Our team works hard to make sure you understand every step so you and your loved ones can feel confident in the plan ahead.
Treatment Options
Facing cancer can be tremendously difficult, but knowing your treatment options can help you feel more in control. At TidalHealth, we offer a wide range of treatments tailored to your individual needs, delivered with warmth and support from our caring team.
Surgery
Surgery is often one of the first steps in treating many cancers. Our surgeons place your well-being at the center of their work, using the latest innovations and minimally invasive techniques. In some cases, robotic-assisted surgery may be recommended for greater precision and comfort during recovery.
Medical oncology
Medical oncology uses medications to slow or destroy cancer cells. Treatments may include chemotherapy, biotherapy and immunotherapy, all carefully chosen to fit your diagnosis and needs. Our medical oncologists, hematologists and internists provide care for all types of cancer, guiding you through each step and helping manage any side effects. Infusion treatments are provided in an environment designed to be relaxing and supportive, with amenities that make your time here more comfortable.
Radiation oncology
Radiation therapy uses powerful energy beams to target and stop cancer cells from growing. Radiation oncologists work closely with your care team to recommend the right approach and create a personalized plan. We offer advanced technology such as intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT), stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT), and high-dynamic range imaging (HDRI) for accurate, effective treatment. Nurse navigators and care coordinators are always available to guide and support you and your family.
Clinical Trials
TidalHealth can connect you with clinical trials that offer access to new treatment options and emerging technologies. Participating in a clinical trial may give you additional choices, and our clinical trial nurses will discuss opportunities, prevention and quality of life considerations so you can make informed decisions.
Our Salisbury hospital is one of three hospitals in Maryland — and the only Eastern Shore hospital — accepted into the elite Johns Hopkins Clinical Research Network. We also participate in National Cancer Institute and pharmaceutical-sponsored studies.
No single path is right for everyone. Together, we will discuss your options and build a treatment plan that feels right for you, supporting you through every stage of your care.
Support Services
When facing a challenging cancer diagnosis, community support brings healing energy. Connecting with community, government, and non-profit resources are key elements to cancer treatment and navigation of the process to tackle your health.
Support groups and counseling
Our support groups welcome survivors, patients and caregivers, offering a space to share, listen and find encouragement. Free counseling is available to help manage the emotional stress that can come with a cancer diagnosis.
Resource libraries and education
Knowledge is powerful. Our resource libraries offer up-to-date information about cancer and its treatments so patients and families can make informed decisions. Educational classes and online resources are also available.
