Instructions 48-hour pH study (BRAVO) for patients of TidalHealth Gastroenterology in Salisbury
Your doctor has ordered for you a 48-hour pH study (BRAVO), which records the acid exposure in the esophagus (swallowing tube) for a 48-hour period. This test will help your doctor offer you the best plan of care.
The procedure is performed by a Registered Nurse and interpreted by a Gastroenterologist.
A small electrode will be positioned in your esophagus. The electrode will transmit a signal to a small recording device that you will wear around your waist. Once the electrode is in place, please remain active and proceed with your normal daily activities as much as possible.
We will ask you to keep a diary of your activities, meals, your symptoms and any medication that you take. You will return to the Endoscopy department in 48 hours to return the monitor and diary. The information from the recorder will be sent to your doctor for analysis.
Complications are very rare but some side effects such as a sore throat or a vague sensation that “something” is in your esophagus may occur.
Several days after the test, the electrode naturally falls off the wall of the esophagus and passes through the digestive tract and is eliminated from the body.
Preparation
- Do not eat or drink for at least 6 hours before the test. You will be able to eat your regular diet after the capsule is in place.
- Do not get the recorder wet. It is a very expensive piece of equipment and you will be responsible to protect it from any damage. If it is not returned, it will be billed to your account.
- You may not have a MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) study for 30 days after this BRAVO test.
- Please follow your doctor’s instructions about medication (antacid) usage.
- If you take Reglan or Carafate you must stop taking them 3 days before test.
Specific instructions regarding medication and your appointment time will be given to you by the office. If you have any questions or concerns, please call 410-543-7590.
