TidalHealth Transitional Year Residency program requirements
Application information
- ERAS application: All applications must be submitted through ERAS.
- No pre-matches: We do not offer pre-match placements.
- Interview period: Interviews will be conducted from November through January.
- Application deadline: Nov. 1 of each year.
- Preference: The Transitional Year program is for applicants who need one year of medicine training to enter another specialty-training program other than the TidalHealth Internal Medicine Residency program.
Visa requirements
- J-1 Visa: Foreign medical graduates must have a J-1 visa, permanent resident status, employment authorization document or green card.
USMLE scores
- Preference: Preference is given to applicants with a Step 1 passing score and Step 2 score of 220 or higher (first attempt).
ECFMG certification:
- Submission deadline: ECFMG certification must be obtained by the time the rank order list is submitted (February).
Year of graduation
- Preference: We prefer candidates who have graduated within the last four years.
Personal statement
- Please provide us with your postgraduate plans for year two.
U.S. medical school graduates
- Completion of medical school in four years, or the minimum time required for the degree.
- No more than one failed attempt on any medical school course or portion of the USMLE or COMLEX.
International medical graduates (IMGs)
- Successful completion of medical education from an accredited medical school.
- Certified by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).
- Documentation of United States citizenship, permanent residency or lawful status.
- Clinical experience of working in the United States is preferred.
- Research and scholarly activities will be considered favorably.
- USMLE CK scores greater than 220 and passing on the first attempt are preferred.
- Graduation from medical school within the last three years is preferred.
All qualified applications will be reviewed and considered on a case-by-case basis.

- Applications are coordinated through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). All applicants should submit their completed application through ERAS. Our residency program team will begin reviewing completed applications in September. More information and applications can be found on the ERAS website.
