Dr. Fleming was born in August 1924 in Albany, N.Y. and celebrated her 100th birthday with our Salisbury Adult Fitness team on Aug. 14.
She is well-known in the community for her 45 years of service at Salisbury University as a Professor and Chairman of the Music Department.
Our Adult Fitness team had the opportunity to discuss her life, longevity and wisdom:
What is your favorite childhood memory?
Dr. Fleming's favorite childhood memory is taking piano lessons at age seven. Her mother was a wonderful singer, and she would often play records and sing with her mother at home and church.
What did you do to celebrate your 100th birthday?
“My son threw me a big birthday party at the Atlantic Hotel in Berlin, Md. I also had my 80th and 90th birthday parties at the same place!”
At her recent centennial celebration hosted by Salisbury University, many former colleagues and students cheered her on. Dr. Fleming recalled that “there were nearly 100 guests — I remembered all of their faces, but I needed to ask for help with half of their names.”
How has TidalHealth's Adult Fitness program helped you?
“It has made a big difference to help me keep walking. Exercising here has increased my stamina and leg mobility.”
What advice do you have for others who yearn to make it to 100 years old?
"Do the best job you can and enjoy life." She also added that her "good German genes" have likely contributed to her health and longevity.
