TidalHealth Nanticoke is pleased to announce that Tyler Hessert, RN, of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) has been selected as its DAISY Award recipient for April 2025.
Hessert was nominated for the exceptional care and compassion he showed a recent ICU patient:
“We had a patient with terminal cancer who had been admitted multiple times. She informed Dr. Lukolic that Tyler was the only spiritual care provider she felt comfortable speaking with. Dr. Lukolic then asked and clarified that Tyler is actually a nurse, not part of our spiritual care team.
Tyler had built a strong connection with the patient during her previous visit. I was asked to contact him to see if he would be willing to meet with the patient. Although not scheduled to return to the hospital for another two days, he offered to come in on his day off if her condition worsened. The next day, the patient had significantly declined. I immediately contacted Tyler, who dropped everything to come in and meet with both Dr. Lukolic and the patient.
Tyler always goes above and beyond for our patients, and in this case his actions were truly exceptional. He provided the patient with the peace and support she needed to navigate her hospital stay and make difficult decisions. This is what being a DAISY winner is all about. Congratulations, Tyler!”
Hessert was honored with the DAISY Award in a ceremony before his colleagues. He received certificates commending him for being an extraordinary nurse, and a sculpture called “A Healer's Touch,” hand-carved by artists of the Shona Tribe in Zimbabwe.
The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation is based in Glen Ellen, Calif., and was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Barnes died at age 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little-known but not uncommon autoimmune disease.
The care Barnes and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.
