TidalHealth Nanticoke is pleased to announce that Heather Shipley, RN, of Labor and Delivery has been selected as its DAISY Award recipient for May 2025.
Shipley was nominated for the exceptional care and compassion she showed a recent Labor and Delivery patient during one of the most difficult times of their life:
“On January 29, I was admitted due to a second-trimester miscarriage at 15 weeks of gestation. My nurse, Heather, rarely left my side while going through the process of delivering the fetus. She was kind, caring, and reassured me that everything that was happening was normal for my body, and it was doing everything it should.
At one point, my blood pressure dropped very low, and I was afraid I was going to pass out. She quickly got me cold water and additional support while they checked everything to make sure I was ok. She kept me clean, calm and always made sure my partner was ok as well.
She made the traumatic experience as pleasant as it could be and provided exceptional care physically and mentally. She had never experienced a second-trimester miscarriage as a nurse, so we learned together and anytime she was unsure of next steps, Hannah (I believe was the name of the charge nurse who was also great) provided her with the information, and she stepped up.
I never thought I would laugh through the process, but Heather made it a very relaxing environment. The entire team from check-in to check-out was great, but Heather went above and beyond, and we are forever thankful that she was there for us."
Shipley was honored with the DAISY Award in a ceremony before her colleagues. She received certificates commending her for being an extraordinary nurse, and a sculpture called “A Healer's Touch,” hand-carved by artists of the Shona Tribe in Zimbabwe.
The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation is based in Glen Ellen, Calif., and was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Barnes died at age 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little-known but not uncommon autoimmune disease.
The care Barnes and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.
