Gabriella (Gabby) Costagliola, RN, of TidalHealth Peninsula Regional’s 3 West patient care unit, has been selected as the July 2024 recipient of the DAISY Award for her compassionate care and special attention provided to a recent patient.
Her nomination reads:
“Gabby embodies all the qualities that make an outstanding nurse. She is cheerful, honest, funny, helpful and has a very upbeat attitude that rubs off on everyone in the room.
I was admitted the last week in May and was very sick. She was with me the first couple of days when I was the most worried, popping in frequently to keep me posted on anything I needed to know.
One of the days I was to be NPO (nothing to eat or drink) because of a procedure in the operating room (OR) that was planned. The day went into the afternoon and then the evening with nothing to do but think about food and water. She continued to call the OR to see where I was on the schedule. As miserable as I was, I was also so appreciative of her persistence and her updates. I never needed to ask because I knew she was working on it. It was Memorial Day with skeleton staff, I ended up being the last patient of the day, but I never felt forgotten.
Gabby's presence is a beacon of hope and positivity, making a significant impact on both her colleagues and patients. She is a very important member of the healthcare team bridging the gap between the physician and patient.”
Costagliola was recently honored with the DAISY Award in a ceremony before her colleagues. She received certificates commending her for being an extraordinary nurse, and a sculpture called A Healer's Touch, hand-carved by artists of the Shona Tribe in Zimbabwe.
The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation is based in Glen Ellen, Calif., and was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Barnes died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little-known but not uncommon autoimmune disease.
The care Barnes and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.
