Editor's Note: This is the first time, we believe, that the Daisy and Sunshine recipients have come from the same unit in the same month AND been nominated by the SAME patient at TidalHealth Peninsula Regional.
November Sunshine
Charlotte Matthews, certified nursing assistant (CNA), on the patient care unit 5 South, has been selected as TidalHealth Peninsula Regional's November 2024 Sunshine Award recipient for her professionalism, kindness, and compassion.
Matthews was nominated by a patient, who wrote:
“Every time I have had Charlotte as my CNA she went above and beyond to ensure my comfort, even when she was mentoring a new CNA and teaching her how to do everything correctly without taking any shortcuts. There were several times when I was in pain and not in the greatest of moods, but each time Charlotte came in she would make jokes to cheer me up. Even though she just recently had surgery herself, Charlotte always made sure that I was comfortable in every way. She just puts a smile on your face.”
Matthews was honored in a ceremony before her coworkers and presented with fresh flowers, a pin and a certificate recognizing her exceptional devotion to team and patient care.
November Daisy
Chris Metzger, RN, of TidalHealth Peninsula Regional’s 5 South patient care unit, has been selected as the November 2024 recipient of the DAISY Award for his compassionate care and special attention provided to a recent patient during an extremely emotional and traumatic time.
In her nomination, the patient wrote:
“Chris has been my nurse a few times and is always polite, goes above and beyond what is expected to make sure I’m well taken care of, and always has the time to answer any questions I have about my care and care plan. And, when he doesn’t have the answers, he finds them. He’s a very knowledgeable nurse and always smiling. Even when my CNA wasn’t available to assist me, Chris stepped in to take care of those needs himself. It would be great if every nurse did what he does to make sure that his patients are happy.”
Metzger was recently honored with the DAISY Award in a ceremony before his colleagues. He received certificates commending him for being an extraordinary nurse, and a sculpture called A Healer's Touch, hand-carved by artists of the Shona Tribe in Zimbabwe.
The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation is based in Glen Ellen, Calif., and was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Barnes died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little-known but not uncommon autoimmune disease.
The care Barnes and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.
