In today's episode of VolunTEEN Voices, we share the story of Kendal Emge, a second-year TidalHealth VolunTEEN in the Emergency Department and 5 Layfield units at TidalHealth Peninsula Regional in Salisbury, Md.:
The first time I stepped into the Emergency Department (ED) at TidalHealth, I was met with a mix of excitement and nervousness. The ED seemed huge and I had no idea what I was doing; however, I was more excited for the opportunities to come.
As I wrap up my second summer volunteering as a VolunTEEN at TidalHealth, I reflect on the more than 160 hours I’ve dedicated to patient floors like 3 and 5 Layfield as well as the cafeteria. Yet, it’s my time in the ED that has left a huge impact on me. Here is what a typical day volunteering in the ED looks like and just a bit of the experience I’ve gained:
As soon as I walk into the ED and put my things down, I head straight to Faye, my favorite patient care technician, who has become a mentor of sorts. With her guidance, I start my morning tasks, which often include stocking IV carts, nurses' stations, and the "blue carts" — a collection of frequently used and vital medical items. These tasks, though they may seem boring, are crucial for maintaining the flow of care. Each item I handle — from IV needles to bandages — is critical to the emergency care process, and getting familiar with them has deepened my understanding of their significance.
Navigating the hospital’s hallways and rooms has its challenges but has become easier as I make regular trips to the basement to go to the supply room, the mailroom and other essential areas. This constant movement reveals the hidden layers of hospital work — each department, from supply management to housekeeping, plays an important role in patient care. These roles are often under-appreciated but are crucial to ensuring the ED and other areas in the hospital operate efficiently.
One particularly memorable experience was observing a team of nurses and doctors perform life-saving care for a Level 1 trauma patient. The room was a whirlwind of activity, filled with lots of tubes, cords and medical equipment. Despite the chaotic scene, the team moved with amazing precision and speed, each member contributing to a well-planned effort. The tension and pressure were felt, yet the composure and efficiency of the medical staff were inspiring. Watching them work seamlessly under such intense circumstances was a huge reminder of the skill and dedication required in emergency care.
Throughout my time in the ED, I’ve encountered a wide range of medical situations. I’ve learned to identify the subtle signs of strokes, witnessed the careful procedure of suturing, and observed the process of placing IVs and performing EKGs. These experiences have been extremely useful, providing me with a deeper knowledge and appreciation for the skills of healthcare professionals. The doctors and nurses have been generous with their time, often explaining procedures and sharing insights, which has greatly enhanced my learning experience.
Volunteering at TidalHealth has been a life-changing experience, shaping my understanding of the medical field and reinforcing my desire to pursue a career in healthcare. Each day presents new challenges and learning opportunities, from the technical aspects of medical care to the emotional strength required in high-pressure situations. For anyone considering a career in medicine or simply looking to gain a deeper insight into the world of healthcare, I truly recommend this unique and informative experience. It’s not just about giving back to the community; it’s about gaining insight and developing a profound appreciation for the dedication of those who work within it.
