- Lung cancer
According to the Centers for Disease Control, lung cancer is the third most common cancer in the U.S., and the leading cause of cancer death. TidalHealth’s team approach to care and state-of-the-art technology aids in early detection and treatment. - Pulmonary nodules
A pulmonary nodule is a small growth in the lung that can be cancerous or non-cancerous. Symptoms include cough and shortness of breath or coughing up blood. TidalHealth offers low-dose CT screenings to detect these nodules and a multidisciplinary team that reviews the scans and determines next steps. Patients qualify for annual screenings based on smoking and family history.
- Pleural disease
Pleural disease occurs in the pleural space, which is the thin fluid-filled area between the lung membranes. There are several disorders and complications that can occur within the pleural area, and the surrounding tissues in the lung. - Pericardial disease
This is a common condition in which there is inflammation of the pericardium, the thin membrane surrounding the heart. There is normally a small amount of fluid between the inner and outer layers of the pericardium. When the pericardium becomes inflamed, the amount of fluid between its two layers often increases. Difficulty breathing is the main symptom.

Dr. Kurt Wehberg, a pioneer of robotic surgery in our region and is one of many daVinci-trained surgeons at TidalHealth. He received his medical degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Va., and completed his general surgery residency and his cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at the University of Maryland Medical System in Maryland. He is proud to call Delmarva home and enjoys connecting with patients in his office and in the community.
We provide the services you need
- Robotic pericardial window. A pericardial window is a surgery performed on the sac around the heart. A small part of the sac is removed, which lets extra fluid drain from the sac.
- Robotic thoracic surgery. This minimally invasive approach is performed with the da Vinci Surgical Robot and leads to smaller scars, shorter hospital stays and quicker recoveries.
- Robotic decortication. During this procedure, infection is removed from around the lung so it can expand.
