Before you leave

the Emergency Department — please talk to us before you go.

We know emergency visits can be long, stressful and frustrating. But leaving before your care is complete can put your health at risk — even if you feel better.

Some serious conditions do not show obvious symptoms right away. Test results may still be pending, and your care team may still be watching for changes that could affect your treatment.

Why staying matters

Before you leave, your care team may still need to:

  • Review lab work, imaging or other test results
  • Complete your evaluation or treatment
  • Explain what symptoms to watch for
  • Provide instructions for care at home
  • Help you plan follow-up care

If you are frustrated by the wait

Long waits usually mean the team is caring for patients with life-threatening emergencies first. You have not been forgotten. Please tell the front desk or triage nurse if:

  • Your symptoms are getting worse
  • Your pain, anxiety or other concerns are increasing
  • You need water, a restroom, a quieter space or another type of assistance
  • You would like an update on your wait

If you feel you must leave

Please speak with a nurse or provider first.

We can explain

  • What we are still concerned about
  • Whether any test results are pending
  • What risks may come with leaving
  • When and where to follow up
  • When to return for emergency care

You have the right to make decisions about your care, including the right to leave against medical advice. If you choose to leave, you may be asked to sign a form confirming that the risks were explained to you.

You can come back at any time. Leaving today does not affect your ability to return for care.

Come back right away or call 911 if you have:

  • Chest pain, pressure or trouble breathing
  • Sudden weakness, numbness, confusion, trouble speaking or severe headache
  • Severe or worsening pain
  • High fever, fainting or uncontrolled bleeding
  • Any symptom that worries you
