Andrew Canakis, DO is a gastroenterologist specializing in advanced endoscopic procedures. He grew up on Maryland’s Eastern Shore and is excited to bring state-of-the-art care back to our region.
Dr. Canakis attended the College of William and Mary, where he received a bachelor’s degree in History. He then went on to earn his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, where he was the recipient of the 2018 Mason Pressly Award. He completed his internal medicine residency at Boston University Medical Center and his general gastroenterology fellowship at the University of Maryland Medical Center. He then completed an advanced therapeutic endoscopy fellowship at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He received dedicated training in therapeutic EUS procedures.
With a robust research portfolio of more than 130 publications, Dr. Canakis has contributed to numerous advancements in the field. His work has been presented at national and international conferences, peer-reviewed journals, and medical textbooks. His commitment to academic teaching and research has led to mentorship of many medical trainees. He previously served as the chair for the residency scholarship committees in Boston and Maryland. He continues to play an active role in mentoring and training medical students, residents and fellows. He serves as the associate program director for the TidalHealth Gastroenterology Fellowship.
As well as general gastroenterology, Dr. Canakis’s special areas of interest include pancreaticobiliary disease, management of early-stage gastrointestinal cancers and minimally invasive management options for complex hepatobiliary disorders. Dr. Canakis is double board-certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology.
