Hospitalist
Hospitalists are doctors who focus on caring for patients during hospital stays. Their main role is to manage acute medical issues that need inpatient treatment, coordinate care with specialists and other members of your care team and ensure transitions from the hospital to home or another care setting are safe and well-planned.
Our hospitalists at TidalHealth are skilled in managing complex medical conditions, responding to changes in your health, and overseeing tests and daily treatment decisions while you are admitted. They work closely with nurses, pharmacists, therapists, case managers, social workers, and consulting specialists to build a coordinated care plan that supports your recovery, safety, and timely discharge.
Patients commonly cared for by our hospitalists include adults with sudden illnesses, those recovering after surgery, and anyone who needs medical stabilization before discharge. Our team remains at your bedside, ready to respond and explain your medical plan, upcoming tests or treatments, and steps for going home.
Some benefits of hospitalist care at TidalHealth include:
- Quick in-person availability whenever you need help
- Strong knowledge of our hospital systems and processes
- Clear communication with your family and your regular doctor
- A team approach that helps reduce complications and support a smoother, safer stay
If you or someone you love is admitted, our hospitalist team will guide you through every step and answer your questions, working with you and your family to support a healthy recovery and a well-coordinated discharge home.
What is a hospitalist?
A hospitalist is a doctor focused on caring for patients while they are in the hospital. They help manage treatment throughout your stay and work closely with your care team to plan for your recovery and discharge.
How is a hospitalist different from my primary care doctor?
Your primary care doctor looks after your overall health over time. A hospitalist steps in to take care of you temporarily while you are admitted and then communicates with your primary care doctor to ensure smooth care once you leave the hospital.
Will my primary care doctor be kept updated about my hospital stay?
Yes. Our hospitalists at TidalHealth send a discharge summary and often reach out to your primary care doctor to review the care you received, changes in your medicines, and any follow-up needs.
Who should I talk to if I have questions about my care in the hospital?
If you have questions, talk to the TidalHealth hospitalist team caring for you. They are your best resource for understanding your daily care plan. Nurses can also relay questions or help arrange updates for your family.
Are hospitalists available after hours?
Most hospitals, including TidalHealth, have hospitalists available day and night to provide continuous care. If concerns come up at night or on weekends, an on-call hospitalist will be there for you.
Will my hospitalist order tests or perform treatments?
Hospitalists are able to order tests and may perform certain bedside treatments within their training. For specialized treatments, they coordinate with the right specialists on your behalf.
How do hospitalists help with discharge planning?
Our hospitalists work with you, your family, and the rest of your care team to organize medicines, therapies, follow-up appointments, and clear instructions for when to get urgent help. The goal is to support a safe recovery at home and help prevent readmissions.
Will I have the same hospitalist every day?
You may see the same hospitalist or a team that rotates care, depending on schedules. Our hand-off process ensures everyone involved stays up to date and your care remains consistent.
How are hospitalist services billed?
Hospitalist care is billed just like other medical services in the hospital. If you have questions about bills or insurance, the TidalHealth billing office or case management team can offer details about charges and what your insurance covers.
