DOT physicals
A DOT physical is a federally required medical exam for commercial motor vehicle drivers who need a commercial driver’s license. At TidalHealth, certified medical examiners follow Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration guidelines to determine whether you meet the medical standards for safe driving.
What the Exam Checks
- Review of medical history and current medications
- Physical assessment, including vision and hearing screening
- Blood pressure and pulse measurement
- Cardiovascular and respiratory checks
- Neurological and musculoskeletal evaluation
- Basic urine testing for certain medical conditions
Drug and alcohol testing is separate and not part of the DOT physical.
Why DOT Physicals Are Required
DOT physicals protect the safety of drivers and everyone on the road by ensuring medical conditions do not affect safe vehicle operation. Meeting federal standards results in a Medical Examiner’s Certificate, often called a DOT card.
How Long Your Certificate Lasts
DOT certificates are typically valid for up to 24 months. Examiners may issue a shorter period for closer monitoring of certain conditions, such as uncontrolled high blood pressure or chronic medical issues. Some situations may require temporary certification or disqualification until proper treatment is completed.
What to Bring to Your Appointment
- Valid photo ID
- Current DOT medical card if renewing
- List of current medications
- Relevant medical history documentation (heart disease, diabetes, sleep apnea, etc.)
- Corrective lenses or hearing aids
- Recent medical records or specialist notes if needed
What to Expect During and After the Exam
Appointments typically last 20–40 minutes. The examiner documents findings on the official federal form and provides a Medical Examiner’s Certificate if you meet requirements. Digital records are created when necessary. If further testing or specialist clearance is required, your examiner will explain next steps. If you do not meet qualifications, reasons and potential solutions will be discussed.
