Gallbladder removal
At TidalHealth, our team is dedicated to providing safe, effective gallbladder removal surgery while supporting your well-being every step of the way. We work closely with you and your physician to ensure your surgery is scheduled promptly and your care is personal, comfortable, and compassionate.
Minimally Invasive Surgery
We specialize in minimally invasive techniques, including laparoscopic and robotic-assisted surgery. These approaches use smaller incisions, often resulting in less pain, a shorter hospital stay, and a faster return to your usual activities.
Our surgeons use minimally invasive surgical robots like the da Vinci Surgical Robot for precise procedures through very small incisions, often leading to a smoother recovery. Minimally invasive surgery has been a part of our care since the 1990s, including the first laparoscopic gallbladder surgery performed by our team. Since then, our specialists have performed thousands of these procedures with a focus on reducing discomfort and supporting your recovery.
When you choose TidalHealth, you can expect care that combines medical expertise with warmth and respect. Our staff is here to answer questions, guide you through preparation, and ensure a safe return home.
What should I expect before gallbladder removal surgery?
Your physician will review the reasons for surgery, its benefits, and any possible risks. Once you decide to proceed, our team will schedule your procedure and review a pre-anesthesia questionnaire with you. This is a good time to share all medications and concerns. Our staff can also help with insurance questions or pre-surgery requirements.
How should I prepare for my gallbladder removal at TidalHealth?
- Do not eat or drink after midnight before your surgery, unless instructed otherwise.
- Bring two forms of identification, including one photo ID, and your health insurance cards.
- Only take medications as directed by your physician, using a small sip of water if necessary.
- Do not wear jewelry or nail polish, and bathe or shower the morning of surgery without creams or lotions.
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing that is easy to put on after surgery.
What happens on the day of surgery?
You will change into a hospital gown and be helped by a nurse to get settled. Our team will review your health and start an IV. Your surgeon and anesthesia team will answer any last-minute questions. Family members can stay with you in the Day Surgery Unit until you are taken to the operating room.
What is recovery like after gallbladder removal?
After surgery, you will be monitored in the recovery area. Nurses will help manage your pain and provide home care instructions. Most people can return to light activities fairly soon after minimally invasive surgery, but always follow your surgeon’s advice.
What should I avoid after going home?
- Do not drive, use heavy machinery, or make important decisions for 24 hours.
- Avoid alcohol for 24 hours and never mix it with pain medication.
- Take pain medication as directed and only drive once you are no longer using it.
Our team is available at every stage to answer questions and support your recovery.
