A patient's journey of healing and strength
On Jan. 22, 2025, Benjamin "Mitch" Simpson experienced a life-changing accident when he fell from a semi-truck approximately 10 to 12 feet high. He sustained multiple fractures and an intracranial hemorrhage, requiring emergency transport to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, where he received life-saving treatment.
Following his acute care, Simpson transitioned to the University of Maryland Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute on Feb. 26, where he made progress but needed additional rehabilitation. On May 8, Simpson transitioned to Alice B. Tawes Nursing & Rehabilitation, presenting with extensive speech and ambulatory deficits.
Since his arrival, Simpson has worked diligently with our dedicated speech, physical and occupational therapy teams, supported every step of the way by our skilled nursing team. Together, they have provided him with comprehensive care, focusing not only on his physical healing, but also on his confidence and independence.
We are excited to announce that Simpson has achieved significant milestones in his recovery and was discharged home on Saturday, Sept. 27. His determination, combined with the commitment and expertise of the Alice B. Tawes Nursing & Rehabilitation team, has made this success story possible.
We are proud of our rehabilitation and nursing teams for their compassion, professionalism, and relentless dedication to helping patients like Simpson reclaim their strength and quality of life.
