We're live spotlight: Karen Blades
As we celebrate the launch of TidalHealth Atlantic, we’re highlighting the team members who make our mission possible every day. Their stories are shaping this new chapter in TidalHealth's history and helping drive positive change in the communities we serve.
Today, we recognize Karen Blades, executive assistant to TidalHealth President and CEO Steve Leonard. She was nominated by Hillary Mozeik for her steadfast support, her willingness to help, and her consistent encouragement of confidence and growth in others.
In her role, Blades works closely with TidalHealth CEO Steve Leonard, COO Cindy Lunsford, and VP Charles Dolan, while also supporting others in the C‑suite to help them meet their goals. She readily offers assistance whenever needed to ensure leaders have the tools and guidance necessary to succeed.
As the senior member of the executive assistants’ group, Blades values sharing the knowledge and experience she has gained over her years in the health system. Her leadership philosophy has been shaped by the presidents she has supported, all of whom emphasized servant leadership. Building trust and confidence is important to her, and she strives to be someone colleagues can rely on for support and direction.
Blades aims to be a consistent resource for the healthcare team, whether she is helping someone communicate with board members, structure an effective meeting, or identify the right contact. She believes that clarity builds confidence, and confidence helps people move forward.
She hopes colleagues will one day reflect on her work and say she was “someone you could count on to provide the best path forward.” One example of her supportive approach came when a colleague struggled to set up Webex for a telepresence meeting. Blades calmly walked them through each step, ensuring they felt encouraged and prepared.
Her advice to others: lead with patience, approachability and a genuine investment in helping people succeed. Take pride in your team over yourself.
Blades’ steady presence and commitment to serving others embody the values at the heart of TidalHealth. Her work behind the scenes strengthens the leaders she supports and the teams who depend on them. As we move forward in this new chapter, her example reminds us that true leadership often shows up quietly — in guidance, patience and a willingness to help others succeed.
