Scott McGovern

Scott McGovern, MD, FAAOS, cares for adolescents and adults with a wide range of neck and back conditions at TidalHealth Peninsula Orthopaedic Institute. He treats pinched nerves, spinal stenosis, disc disorders, scoliosis, spinal instability, tumors, fractures and other complex conditions affecting the spine.

Dr. McGovern specializes in both minimally invasive and complex spine surgery. Patients appreciate his reassuring communication style, his willingness to listen and his ability to match a broad range of treatment options and surgical techniques to each patient’s specific condition and goals.

He takes time to explain the diagnosis, what may be causing the problem and the available treatment options. He also works with patients to understand what they hope to achieve and set realistic expectations for recovery.

Care philosophy

Dr. McGovern believes successful spine care begins with education, open communication and a treatment plan tailored to the individual. He helps patients understand both the “what” and the “why” behind their condition so they can make informed decisions with confidence.

With extensive experience in minimally invasive and complex spine surgery, Dr. McGovern remains actively involved in advancing spinal surgery techniques and technology. He has taught surgeons nationally and serves in physician leadership roles at TidalHealth.

His goal is to align each patient’s expectations with the most appropriate treatment plan while helping them improve function, reduce pain and regain quality of life. Throughout the care journey, he strives to ensure patients feel informed, respected, comfortable and supported. 

Outside of his work

Outside of work, Dr. McGovern enjoys spending time with his family, fishing, hunting and golfing.

He has also served as an adult leader with the Appalachian Service Project, guiding youth mission trips to rural Appalachian communities and helping make homes warmer, safer and drier.
