How often should I have a gynecologic exam?
We recommend that all women 18 years and older have an annual wellness check with a gynecologist or primary care provider. These visits may include a Pap smear, clinical breast exam, and other screenings. Your provider may adjust the schedule based on your health needs and risk factors.
When should I start getting Pap smears?
Pap smears are typically recommended starting at age 21. These tests help detect cervical cancer early. Your provider will advise on how often you should be screened based on your age and medical history.
What screenings are offered during my visit?
A wellness exam may include a general health assessment, pelvic and breast exams, Pap smear, and screenings for gynecologic cancers or sexually transmitted infections. Your provider will discuss which tests are recommended for you.
Why are regular wellness visits important?
Routine gynecologic visits can detect health issues early and provide an opportunity to address questions or changes in your health. Staying proactive helps you maintain long-term wellness.
How can I prepare for my appointment?
- Write down any questions or concerns you have.
- Note the dates of your last menstrual period.
- Bring a list of medications and supplements you take.
- Share any health changes or symptoms with your provider.
