Lymphadema therapy
Lymphedema is swelling, often in the arms or legs, caused by a buildup of lymph fluid when the lymphatic system isn’t functioning properly. While most common in the limbs, it can affect other areas of the body. The lymphatic system helps move fluid and fight infection, and when it’s blocked or damaged, fluid can collect and cause swelling.
Although there is no cure for lymphedema, it can be managed with ongoing treatment. At TidalHealth, our team works to reduce swelling, improve comfort and help you maintain independence.
Causes of Lymphedema
- Primary lymphedema: Caused by missing or underdeveloped lymph nodes or vessels, present at birth.
- Secondary lymphedema: Caused by damage or blockage due to infection, cancer, surgery, or radiation. Cancer treatments—such as for breast, uterine, cervical, melanoma, prostate or throat cancers—can sometimes trigger this condition.
Stages of Lymphedema
- Stage 1 (mild): Swelling is often less noticeable in the morning; skin may leave a dent when pressed.
- Stage 2 (moderate): Swelling does not leave a dent and has a spongy feel.
- Stage 3 (severe): Swollen area becomes hard and enlarged; untreated lymphedema increases risk of infection.

What is lymphedema?
Lymphedema is swelling, usually in the arms or legs, caused by lymph fluid buildup when the lymphatic system isn’t working properly. It may also affect other body areas and can cause discomfort, skin changes, or a feeling of heaviness.
What causes lymphedema?
It can result from missing or abnormal lymph nodes or vessels (primary lymphedema) or from surgery, infection, cancer, or lymph system damage (secondary lymphedema). Cancer treatments, such as surgery or radiation, can increase the risk.
How do I know what stage I have?
Lymphedema is classified into three stages:
- Mild: Soft swelling that leaves a dent when pressed
- Moderate: Tissue feels spongy and bounces back
- Severe: Skin and tissue harden and swelling is more pronounced
Can lymphedema be cured?
No, but it can be managed. Treatment aims to reduce swelling, relieve pain and lower the risk of complications, helping you stay active and comfortable.
How does TidalHealth treat lymphedema?
Treatment is personalized and may include manual lymph drainage, compression bandaging, compression pumps, skin care, exercise programs, Kinesio taping and self-management education.
How long will therapy last?
Programs typically last two to six weeks, though ongoing self-care is often needed to maintain results.
