Physiatry

Physiatry focuses on restoring movement, reducing pain, and improving quality of life for people with physical impairments or disabilities. Our specialists offer non-surgical treatments and coordinated care.

Physiatry, also known as physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R), is a specialty at TidalHealth focused on helping people restore function and improve their quality of life when faced with physical impairments or disabilities. Our specialists care for conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord, nerves, bones, joints, and soft tissues that can lead to pain, weakness, reduced mobility, or loss of independence.

Scope of Care

  • Comprehensive assessments to set practical goals aimed at improving mobility, daily activities, work, and overall enjoyment of life
  • Non-surgical treatments, including medication, therapeutic injections, assistive devices, orthotics, and personalized exercise and rehabilitation plans
  • Procedures such as joint or nerve injections, spasticity management (e.g., botulinum toxin), and electrodiagnostic testing (EMG/NCS) when needed
  • Team-based rehabilitation with physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, social workers, prosthetists/orthotists, pain specialists, and surgeons when appropriate

  • Patients with musculoskeletal pain, such as back, neck, shoulder, or knee pain, suited for non-surgical care
  • Individuals learning to use a prosthetic after amputation

Our Approach
Our physiatrists are committed to patient-centered, team-based care that focuses on your functional goals rather than just the condition itself. The aim is to help you maintain or regain independence, reduce pain, minimize disability, and return to the activities that matter most. Through personalized rehabilitation plans and close teamwork with other specialists, our team works to help you make steady progress and adjust your care as your needs evolve.

What is a physiatrist and how are they different from other doctors?
A physiatrist is a doctor who specializes in physical medicine and rehabilitation. Unlike surgeons, TidalHealth physiatrists focus on improving how you move and function using non-surgical treatments, rehabilitation planning, and working with a team of specialists when needed. While their work may overlap with pain medicine, neurology, orthopedics, or primary care, the main focus is always on helping you live as independently and comfortably as possible.

When should I see a physiatrist?
Consider seeing a physiatrist if you are experiencing loss of function, problems with movement, pain that interferes with your daily life, difficulty returning to work after an illness or injury, or if you need complex rehabilitation after a stroke, spinal cord injury, or amputation.

What happens at my first visit?
During your first visit, your TidalHealth physiatrist will take a detailed history and perform a functional assessment that covers your goals, challenges, living situation, and previous treatments. You can expect a focused exam and sometimes additional tests like imaging or electrodiagnostic studies. A treatment plan with specific and realistic goals will be made with your input.

What treatments can a physiatrist provide?
Treatments may include individualized exercise and rehabilitation programs, medication for pain or spasticity, image-guided injections, neuromuscular electrical stimulation, orthotic or prosthetic recommendations, and coordination with other therapists and providers as needed.

Will I need surgery?
Many people who see a physiatrist at TidalHealth do not need surgery. If surgical care may benefit you, your physiatrist will talk this through and help connect you to a surgical specialist. They also help guide your rehabilitation before and after surgery, supporting the best possible recovery.

How long does rehabilitation take?
The time needed for rehabilitation depends on your condition, its severity, and your personal goals. Some people see improvement within weeks, while more complex conditions can require months to years of steady rehabilitation. Progress is measured by the improvement in what you can do, not just by a change in your symptoms.

Do I need a referral or will insurance cover physiatry care?
Insurance plans vary in whether they require a referral to see a physiatrist and in what services they cover. Many plans cover physiatry visits, rehabilitation services, and testing, although you may need prior approval for some services. Please check with your insurance company and our clinic for more information.

What outcomes can I expect?
The TidalHealth physiatry team is dedicated to helping you improve your independence, reduce pain, and get back to the things that matter most to you. While some conditions may not fully resolve, most people can expect measurable improvement in function and quality of life with individualized goals set together with your specialist.
