Dermatology
At TidalHealth, our dermatology team cares for people of all ages, from infants to older adults. We offer comprehensive care for conditions of the skin, hair, and nails. We can help with medical concerns such as acne, eczema, psoriasis, fungal infections, and more. Our specialists manage chronic skin conditions, screen for and treat skin cancers, and provide treatments such as biopsies and excisions. For those interested, we also offer cosmetic dermatology to address wrinkles, sun damage, scarring, and uneven skin tone.
Your care is led by board-certified dermatologists, supported by dermatology-trained nurse practitioners, physician assistants, dermatopathologists who guide tissue diagnosis, and a compassionate nursing staff. When needed, we work closely with other specialists at TidalHealth, such as primary care providers, pediatricians, oncologists, and plastic surgeons, to ensure your care is well coordinated.
We believe understanding your skin health is just as important as the treatments we provide. Patient education and shared decision-making guide everything we do. We take time to explain diagnoses and options, tailor plans to your goals and routine, and offer straightforward advice for daily skin care, sun safety, and prevention strategies.
No matter the reason for your visit—a chronic condition, a new skin concern, a routine screening, or cosmetic improvement—our goal is to deliver safe, evidence-based care with heart. We are here to help you feel comfortable and confident in your skin.
What conditions do dermatologists treat?
Dermatologists at TidalHealth care for a wide range of skin, hair, and nail concerns, including acne, eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, warts, fungal infections, hair loss, nail disorders, and skin cancer. Our team may also perform biopsies and minor skin treatments when needed.
When should I see a dermatologist instead of my primary care doctor?
It is helpful to see a dermatologist if you have a skin problem that will not go away, a rash that is unclear, an unusual mole or skin spot, changes in a mole such as color or shape, hair loss, nail concerns, or if you need skin treatments not provided by your primary care provider.
What happens at my first dermatology visit?
Your TidalHealth provider will review your health history, your skin care routine, and any medicines you take. They will examine the areas of concern and may do simple tests like skin scrapings, swabs, or a biopsy if needed. You will talk about what is found, what the treatment options are, and next steps. It is helpful to bring any creams or medicines you have used and photos of the condition if it has changed over time.
Do dermatologists treat children?
Yes. TidalHealth offers dermatology care to children for concerns such as eczema, birthmarks, warts, and skin differences present from birth. If your child needs special attention, please ask about seeing a specialist trained in pediatric care.
How is skin cancer screened and treated?
Screening usually includes a careful skin exam looking for any suspicious moles or spots. If something looks concerning, our dermatologist may do a biopsy to help make a diagnosis. Treatment depends on what is found and may include removing the spot, certain specialized skin treatments, or working with other TidalHealth specialists for advanced care.
Are cosmetic procedures offered in dermatology clinics?
Yes. TidalHealth offers many cosmetic services such as chemical peels, laser treatments, injectables like Botox or fillers, microneedling, and medical-grade skin care. Cosmetic treatments are always discussed so you understand benefits, risks, costs, and what results you can realistically expect.
What should I do for everyday skin care and sun protection?
Use sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher every day, try to stay out of the sun when it is strongest, wear protective clothing, and use gentle cleansers and moisturizers that suit your skin. For chronic conditions, follow your provider's instructions and let us know about side effects or if things do not improve as expected.
Does insurance cover dermatology visits and procedures?
Insurance coverage varies. Medical visits and treatments that are needed for health reasons are often covered. Cosmetic treatments are usually not. Check your insurance and ask our TidalHealth team about coverage or any special approvals you may need.
Can dermatology care be provided via telehealth?
Many skin concerns such as rashes, follow-ups for acne, or medicine checks can be assessed by telehealth. For any treatment that needs a hands-on approach or for a full skin check, you will need to be seen in person. Our team can help you decide whether a virtual visit is right for your needs.
How do I manage a flare of a chronic skin condition between visits?
Follow your care plan and use any prescribed treatments as directed. Keep your skin well moisturized, avoid anything you know tends to cause flare-ups, and contact us if your symptoms get worse, you notice infection, or you have questions about your medicines. Early communication helps us help you feel better sooner.
