Welcome message from our Program Director
Greetings from the Eastern Shore of Maryland! We are honored to announce that in September 2023, the ACGME approved and accredited the TidalHealth Anesthesiology Residency Program. Our first cohorts of residents matched in March 2024 to begin their training in July. We are a categorical, four-year training program and accept four excellent applicants per year. If you are compassionate, motivated, adventurous, and interested in becoming an anesthesiologist, we look forward to learning about you and you learning about us!
Our objective is to help our community become better together. We will train residents to become exemplary practitioners and leaders of anesthesia care teams. Our residents will work alongside our faculty, nurse anesthetists, staff, and other departments to provide outstanding care to our patients. As residents progress, we expect they will pay their training forward by helping to train other learners here and elsewhere.
TidalHealth provides advanced-level care to the more than eight million residents and visitors of the Eastern Shore of Maryland and the Delmarva Peninsula. Each year, our system manages more than 23,000 surgical procedures, 20,000 admissions, 2,700 deliveries, and 2,600 trauma visits. Our primary site is TidalHealth Peninsula Regional in Salisbury, a tertiary-care hospital and Level III trauma center. Anesthesiology residents will perform in a vast array of cases and anesthetics. A partial list includes cardiac surgery, thoracic surgery, structural heart procedures, vascular surgery, neurosurgery, trauma, orthopedics, and obstetrics.
Our system also includes TidalHealth Nanticoke, a nearby hospital with a different range of cases and patient population, and our busy surgery center and chronic pain practices in Salisbury. Residents will also supplement their experience with rotations at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore and Children’s National Hospital in DC. A sample of the anticipated rotations for each clinical year is attached.
First-year resident education will emphasize fundamental aspects of medical, surgical, intensive, and emergent care. Interns will gain familiarity with core concepts and procedures of anesthesia. Dedicated teaching and independent study time will allow residents to prepare for successful completion of the USMLE or COMLEX exams needed to complete licensure. Residents will learn anesthesiology from faculty experienced in all aspects of anesthesia, pain management, critical illness, and patient-centered care.
Residents will learn through hands-on experience in patient care, didactic sessions, simulation exercises, and faculty-guided projects. Our schedule provides protected time for resident education and includes core topics such as ethics, interpersonal communication, professionalism, and systems-based practice. TidalHealth has opened a state-of-the-art simulation center for training in many procedures and techniques, including point-of-care ultrasound. We also have the Richard A. Henson Research Institute and are ready to assist residents in developing and completing projects. Residents will complete the training required to excel at independent practice and board-certification exams.
The Delmarva Peninsula lies between the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic coast and is comprised of the Eastern Shores of Maryland and Virginia, plus most of the land mass of Delaware. Over half a million people reside here and over eight million visit annually. This region is blessed with lovely scenery and a temperate, mid-Atlantic climate. Beaches and boating are less than one hour from Salisbury. Fishing, hiking, camping, and other outdoor activities abound. Low traffic and a low cost of living make working and living here easy. The attractions of the DC-Baltimore and Philadelphia metro areas are about two to three hours away. You can even drive from the hospital to ski resorts in four hours or less!
Join us, and you will learn anesthesiology from a robust practice with a motivated faculty and staff, working amidst a supportive environment in a great part of the United States. If you have further questions, please contact Ms. Amy Argot, our program coordinator, at [email protected].
Thank you for your interest in TidalHealth!
Cheers,
Steve Gibson, M.D., Ph.D.
