Respiratory syncytial virus or RSV, is a common respiratory illness that can affect people of all ages. While it often causes mild, cold‑like symptoms, it can be more serious in certain groups — especially infants, young children, older adults, and individuals with underlying health conditions. At TidalHealth, we understand how concerning it can be when you or your child experiences symptoms like a persistent cough, fever, or trouble breathing. Our practitioners are here to help you recognize RSV and offer care tailored to your family’s needs.

What is RSV?
RSV is a virus that infects the lungs and respiratory tract. Most cases are mild, but RSV can sometimes lead to more serious illness such as bronchiolitis or pneumonia, particularly in infants, young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems.

Symptoms of RSV

  • Coughing or wheezing
  • Fever
  • Runny nose
  • Decreased appetite
  • Difficulty or rapid breathing
  • Irritability or unusual tiredness

How RSV Spreads
RSV is highly contagious and spreads through droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. It can also spread by touching contaminated surfaces and then touching the face, especially the nose, mouth or eyes.

Treatment and Care
Most children with RSV recover at home with supportive care, which includes:

  • Plenty of rest
  • Staying hydrated
  • Monitoring breathing and other symptoms

Some infants, young children, older adults, or individuals with underlying health conditions may develop more serious complications that require medical attention. TidalHealth practitioners can guide you on when to seek in‑person care and how to stay comfortable during recovery.

Prevention Tips

  • Wash hands frequently with soap and water
  • Keep your child away from people who are sick
  • Clean toys and surfaces regularly
  • Avoid sharing cups and utensils
  • Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or elbow
