Surgery

TidalHealth offers a wide range of surgical treatments, including minimally invasive and robotic options. Our team provides compassionate support and clear guidance before, during and after your surgery.

At TidalHealth, our team works closely with your physician to provide surgical care that is personal, timely and centered on your comfort and safety. We offer a wide range of surgical treatments, using the latest technology to help speed recovery times and reduce discomfort so you can get back to your daily life as quickly as possible.

We are proud to offer both traditional and minimally invasive options, including procedures performed with the help of advanced equipment like the daVinci Surgical Robot. Minimally invasive and robotic surgeries usually mean smaller incisions, which can result in less pain and quicker healing. Our team also uses laparoscopic techniques to further minimize recovery time for many procedures.

Our caring staff is committed to making your experience as pleasant and reassuring as possible. We know that facing surgery can be stressful, so you can expect a warm, supportive environment from the moment you arrive. Smiles and positive attitudes are part of our culture, and we are here to answer your questions and address your concerns every step of the way.

If you are considering surgery or have questions about your options, our team is ready to help you feel informed and at ease throughout your care at TidalHealth.

What to Expect Before Surgery

At TidalHealth, your comfort and preparedness matter to us. Your physician will talk with you about your upcoming surgery, including the risks, benefits and any alternatives. Once you and your physician decide together to move forward, our team will help you schedule your procedure and guide you through the important steps before surgery.

Pre-Admission and Testing

You will be asked to complete a pre-anesthesia questionnaire, which can be emailed, faxed or dropped off to the facility where you are having surgery. One of our pre-admission nurses will review this with you, usually three to five business days before your planned procedure. Be honest with our team about any medical or anesthesia problems, and share all medications you are taking, including over-the-counter items and herbal remedies. This is your opportunity to ask questions or share concerns so you feel comfortable moving forward.

We will also contact you before your arrival to verify your insurance details and help with any required prior authorizations. Routine pre-op testing is only done when necessary, based on your procedure or medical condition. Your surgeon or anesthesiologist may request extra testing or consultations as needed, depending on your health history.

Day of Surgery Reminders

  • Bring two forms of identification, including one photo ID.
  • Bring your health insurance cards.
  • Do not eat or drink after midnight the night before your surgery, unless told otherwise by your healthcare practitioner.
  • Only take medications if your surgeon or anesthesiologist tells you to, and only with small sips of water.
  • No alcoholic beverages in the 24 hours before surgery.
  • Avoid wearing any jewelry, including body piercings.
  • Bathe or shower the morning of your surgery, but do not use creams, lotions or nail polish.
  • Do not bring valuables like jewelry or money. If you wear contact lenses, bring a container and solution.
  • Dress in loose, comfortable clothing that is easy to put on after your surgery.

Arriving for Surgery

When you arrive, a staff member will help you get settled and ready for surgery. You will change into a provided gown and your clothing will be safely stored. Our nurse will review your health and medication information, start your IV and answer any remaining questions. Your family or significant other may stay with you up until the time you go to the operating room, though we encourage limiting visitors for comfort and privacy.

You will meet your surgeon, anesthesiologist and nurse anesthetist before surgery. Your surgeon will also mark the correct spot on your body for surgery, and we will frequently check your identity to keep you safe. Once everything is ready, our team will take you to the operating room and closely monitor you throughout your procedure.

In some cases, your surgeon may decide that you need to stay in the hospital after your surgery, depending on how you are feeling and your needs following surgery.

If you have any questions before your appointment, please reach out to our caring staff. We are here to help you feel prepared and confident at each step.

Immediately After Surgery

Once your surgery is complete, our team will move you to the Day Surgery Unit or the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) for careful observation and recovery. We will keep a close eye on your blood pressure, pain levels and overall well-being. Our staff will offer medication and comfort measures to help manage any pain you may feel, and we will ask you to rate your pain so we can support you as best as possible.

If your recovery requires a longer stay, you may be moved to an Extended Recovery area or a patient room, where nursing staff will continue to care for you. We encourage you to take deep breaths and cough gently, which helps clear your lungs after anesthesia. Holding a towel or small blanket over your incision area can help reduce discomfort when you move or cough.

Getting Ready to Go Home

Before you leave, your nurse will go over your home care instructions with you and a responsible adult. We want to make sure you understand how to care for yourself and know what to watch for after your surgery. You will receive a copy of these instructions to take home.

What to Remember After You Leave

  • Do not operate heavy machinery or equipment, and avoid making important decisions for 24 hours after your surgery.
  • Do not drink alcohol for 24 hours after your surgery, and never mix alcohol with pain medication.
  • Take your pain medications exactly as instructed by your provider.
  • Do not drive while taking pain medication.

If you have any concerns or questions after you return home, our team at TidalHealth is here to support you. Please reach out to us so we can help you recover comfortably and safely.
