Cardiovascular Surgery

TidalHealth provides advanced cardiovascular surgery, including minimally invasive options, to care for your heart with compassion and skill every step of the way.

At TidalHealth, our cardiovascular surgery team is here to support you and your loved ones with care you can trust. We work closely with your physician to provide timely surgical services, using the latest procedures and advanced technology to help you recover faster and return home sooner.

Our approach includes minimally invasive and robotic surgery using techniques like the daVinci Surgical Robot, so many procedures require only small incisions. This means less pain and a quicker recovery after surgery. Our caring staff makes every patient’s experience as personal, comfortable, and pleasant as possible. You can expect a warm, supportive, and safe environment throughout your stay.

What We Offer
TidalHealth provides a wide range of cardiovascular and thoracic surgical care. We are proud to be one of the busiest heart programs in Maryland, with more than 450 open heart surgeries performed each year. Our offerings include:

  • Minimally invasive heart and lung surgeries
  • Robotic-assisted procedures
  • Open heart surgery, including bypass and valve repair or replacement
  • Endoscopic vein harvest
  • Beating heart valve surgery
  • Transmyocardial revascularization (TMR)

Minimally invasive surgery can reduce incision pain, help you recover faster, and lower the risk of complications. Using the daVinci Surgical Robot, our surgeons have performed more than 1,000 procedures, offering precise treatment through small incisions. Our team relies on the latest proven techniques to support your recovery and long-term heart health.

From the moment your treatment is planned, we are with you every step of the way, making sure your questions are answered and your needs are met. You can count on our experience and kindness as you move toward better health.

How do I prepare for cardiovascular surgery?
Your physician will discuss your surgery with you ahead of time, explaining the risks, benefits, and alternatives. After deciding to move forward, our team at TidalHealth will help schedule your procedure. You’ll complete a pre-anesthesia questionnaire and review your medical history with a pre-admission nurse a few days before surgery. Please inform us of any medical conditions and medications you are taking, including over-the-counter and herbal supplements. This step is essential to keep you safe and comfortable.

What should I bring on the day of surgery?

  • Two forms of identification, including a photo ID
  • Your health insurance cards
  • Do not bring valuables or jewelry to the hospital
  • Wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing for after your surgery

It’s important not to eat or drink anything after midnight the night before surgery unless instructed otherwise. If you have questions about medications, ask your physician or anesthesiologist for guidance.

What can I expect when I arrive for surgery?
A staff member will guide you to a room to change into a hospital gown. Your nurse will check your health information and start an IV for medication and fluids. Your surgeon, anesthesiologist, and nurse anesthetist will meet with you to answer questions before the procedure. Family can stay with you during this time, but we ask that you bring no more than two visitors.

What happens after my cardiovascular surgery?
After surgery, you will be monitored in a recovery area. Your nurse will track your blood pressure and pain levels and help manage any discomfort. Before you go home, you and your caregiver will receive clear instructions for recovery, including how to care for yourself and follow-up steps.

Are there things I should avoid after going home?

  • Do not drive while taking prescription pain medications
  • Avoid operating heavy machinery or making important decisions for at least 24 hours
  • Do not drink alcohol for 24 hours after surgery, and never mix alcohol with pain medication

Your comfort, safety, and understanding are important to us. If you have any questions at any time, please reach out to our team at TidalHealth. We are here to help every step of the way.
