Hernia repair

Our caring team provides hernia repair using newer techniques, including minimally invasive and robotic options. These are all designed to help you recover faster and with less discomfort.

At TidalHealth, we understand how important it is to get you back to feeling your best. Our team provides hernia repair services that are effective, compassionate and focused on your comfort and recovery.

We work closely with your physician to coordinate and perform hernia repairs as soon as possible. Our approach includes minimally invasive options, such as laparoscopic and robotic-assisted surgery. These techniques use small incisions, which can mean less pain and a quicker return to normal activities.

Our specialists use advanced surgical technology, including the da Vinci Surgical Robot. This technology allows for precise movements and often leads to faster healing and shorter hospital stays. We also continue to rely on trusted laparoscopic techniques that have been part of our care for decades.

Throughout your experience, you are supported by our caring staff. We focus on creating a warm, safe and welcoming environment. From preparing for surgery to recovering afterward, our goal is to make your experience as comfortable and positive as possible.

How should I prepare for my hernia surgery?
Your physician will review the surgery, including risks, benefits and alternatives. After surgery is scheduled, you will complete a pre-anesthesia questionnaire. A TidalHealth nurse will review it with you three to five business days before your procedure. Be sure to list all medications, including over-the-counter and herbal products. You will also receive a call to confirm insurance and procedure details. Limited pre-operative testing may be needed based on your health and the type of surgery.

What should I bring the day of surgery?

  • Bring two forms of identification, including a photo ID, and your health insurance cards.
  • Do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before surgery unless instructed otherwise.
  • Avoid taking medications unless directed. Use only small sips of water if needed.
  • Do not wear jewelry or bring valuables.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing that is easy to put on after surgery.
  • Bathe or shower the morning of surgery, but avoid lotions, creams or nail polish.

What happens after my hernia repair?
After surgery, you will recover in a monitored area where nurses check your comfort and safety. They will manage pain, monitor vital signs and review home care instructions with you and a family member or friend. Most patients go home the same day, though an overnight stay may be recommended in some cases.

Are there activity restrictions after surgery?

  • Do not drive, operate heavy equipment or make important decisions for 24 hours after surgery or while taking pain medication.
  • Take pain medication exactly as directed.
  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours and do not mix alcohol with pain medicine.
