Our Goal
The TidalHealth Neurology Residency is committed to training knowledgeable, compassionate neurologists who provide exceptional, evidence-based care to diverse patient populations. Through comprehensive clinical experiences, dedicated mentorship, and a supportive learning environment, we prepare residents to excel in the diagnosis and management of neurological disorders. We are committed to fostering professionalism, intellectual curiosity, and lifelong learning while encouraging engagement in scholarship, quality improvement, and community service.
To fulfill the mission, the TidalHealth Neurology Residency program aims to:
- Train residents to understand basic and clinical neurosciences, as well as provide high-quality patient care in their community.
- Provide residents with a comprehensive clinical curriculum, including inpatient, consultative, and outpatient neurological services.
- Engage residents in neurology-focused quality improvement and scholarly activity projects to promote dedication to professional growth and life-long learning.
- Prepare residents for autonomous practice upon graduation, by providing them with the foundations for competence in neurology and its subspecialties, understanding and leveraging healthcare systems in the United States, and participation in patient advocacy.

Welcome From Our Program Director
Welcome to the Neurology Residency program at TidalHealth! Thank you for taking the time to visit our website. We are excited to have the opportunity to foster this next stage in your professional career, as we all continue our adventure in learning together
Our program is a newly accredited four-year program, with our inaugural class starting in July 2026. We are supported by a program director, program coordinator, four core faculty physicians, seven employed neurologists and 10 general faculty members. TidalHealth is a well-established hospital system that dates back to 1897, and which now encompasses three campuses on the Delaware/Maryland/Virginia peninsula, with unique learning experiences offered by each site. With two residents per PGY year, access to faculty is unmatched in our area and allows for individualized mentorship and development of clinical and research interests.
Unique aspects of our program include:
- A commitment to training our residents to treat patients holistically. To support this, our plans for our residents include participatory exposure to local patient advocacy groups like the Epilepsy Foundation, Delaware and Maryland Chapters; the Multiple Sclerosis Society; and the Alzheimer’s Disease Association, and national organizations like the Sturge-Weber Foundation and the Cute Syndrome Foundation. Attending national advocacy conferences is supported based upon individual resident interests.
- Our dedication to individualizing resident education with maximal one-on-one teaching opportunities via a large faculty-to-resident ratio.
- A forward-thinking curriculum designed to leverage the best teaching opportunities, which include child neurology rotations at the Nemours Children’s Hospital in Wilmington, Delaware, and an immersive neuropathology rotation at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Housing and travel arrangements are fully supported by Tidal Health for these essential learning experiences.
- A call schedule featuring standard internal medicine call in year one, and then only limited night float from home in years two, three and four, designed to provide the minimum necessary educational experiences and resulting comfort level for the future practicing neurologist without being a survival challenge.
- Our commitment to resident procedural competency and comfort via regular sessions at our multi-million-dollar, state-of-the-art TidalHealth Center for Training and Simulation.
- Our support for research at the TidalHealth Richard A. Henson Research Institute, through which we collaborate with Johns Hopkins. Ample elective time is provided in years three and four for residents to complete a research project of their choosing. Additional collaborative arrangements exist, including with the divisions of neurology and research at Nemours Children’s Hospital.
- Our dedication to resident, faculty and staff wellness with wellness sessions incorporated in our didactics, as well as regular evening outings, and annual retreats. Our primary location on the Eastern Shore of Maryland lies near award-winning beaches, the beautiful Chesapeake Bay, and multiple national parks, in support of our commitment to a lifestyle that is both educationally productive and healthy. Having large metropolitan cities, such as Washington D.C., Baltimore and Philadelphia, located a few hours away is an added convenience for an expansive arts and culture scene.
The TidalHealth Neurology Residency program aims to deliver an exceptional educational experience that imparts residents with the knowledge and skills required to become proficient and humanistic neurologist physicians, dedicated to delivering the highest quality of patient care, safety and professionalism. Our program is committed to keeping pace with the latest educational techniques and technologies to meet the needs of its residents while promoting a supportive and inclusive learning environment that, by its actions, values diversity, respect and teamwork. Our ultimate goal is to produce scientifically minded neurologists who are well-prepared to meet the current and future healthcare challenges of our communities.
In our first years of accreditation, I hope you consider joining our program and being a key member of our team as we build this beautiful legacy.
Warmest regards,
Stephen J. Falchek, MD
