Is head and neck surgery the same as ENT?
Yes, the official specialty name is Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery. ENT is a nickname. All ENTs are head and neck surgeons. The terms are used interchangeably.
What causes head and neck masses and how are they treated?
There is a wide variety of causes of head and neck masses, ranging from benign and malignant tumors, to localized infections. Some neck masses are related to thyroid or salivary gland problems. More rapidly growing neck masses may be a sign of cancer such as lymphoma or spread from voice box or throat cancer.
What are some signs that a child needs to see an ENT specialist?
The most common conditions for which your child's pediatrician may refer you to the ENT specialist are recurring infections of the ears, sinuses, or tonsils, or if there are breathing and snoring problems at night. Other indications for referral may include frequent nosebleeds, a lump in the neck, or hearing concerns.
