Clinical training
Fellows will gain experience in the following settings:
- Inpatient consult services: Fellows will provide consultations at the hospital managing a diverse range of complex infectious diseases in ICU and the general medicine floor that include HIV/AIDS and HIV related opportunistic infections, endocarditis, meningitis, neurosurgical and orthopedic infections and post-surgical infections, malaria, dengue.
- Outpatient clinic: Fellows will train in weekly clinic managing chronic infectious diseases that include HIV, hepatitis C and hepatitis B infections and manage tropical diseases such as parasitic infections and provide pre-travel vaccinations.
- Immunocompromised patient care: Fellows will rotate through University of Maryland transplant unit and manage patients on chemotherapy and solid organ transplants.
- Pediatric and OB/GYN care: Patient will rotate through Nemours Children's hospital for rotation in pediatric infectious diseases and Anne Arundel Center for OB/GYN rotation.
Subspecialty areas
- HIV/AIDS care: Long-term HIV management, including antiretroviral therapy, complications, and co-infections with tuberculosis and hepatitis.
- Wound care: Fellows will have opportunity for an elective in wound care managing diabetic foot wounds.
- Critical care: In hospital ICU rotation elective managing cases such as burns, septic shock, empyema.
- Orthopedics rotation: Elective in orthopedic surgery managing prosthetic joint infections and meetings with pharmacy to optimize antimicrobial usage to prevent resistance and improve patient outcomes.
- Hospital epidemiology and infection prevention: Participate in infection control meeting and learn to manage hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) and control outbreaks through evidence-based practices.
Committees
- Antimicrobial stewardship: Fellows will participate in antimicrobial stewardship committee meetings with pharmacy to optimize antimicrobial usage to prevent resistance and improve patient outcomes.
- Hospital epidemiology and infection prevention: Participate in infection control meeting and learn to manage hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) and control outbreaks through evidence-based practices. In addition, train fellows to provide quality and attentive patient-centered care to give back to the TidalHealth community.
- Presentations and publications: Opportunities to present at conferences and publish in peer-reviewed journals.
- Clinical studies: Fellows will have the opportunity to participate in research projects partnered with the TidalHealth Richard A. Henson Research Institute.
- Didactics and educational activities
- Weekly case conferences: Discussions of complex cases with faculty and multidisciplinary teams.
- Journal clubs: Monthly critical review of current literature in infectious diseases in collaboration with internal medicine.
- Grand rounds: Presentations by fellows, faculty, and guest speakers on current and emerging topics in infectious diseases.
- Microbiology rounds: Hands-on sessions in microbiology, molecular diagnostics, and infection control techniques.
- Work-life balance: A supportive environment that promotes well-being while encouraging professional growth.
