Pulmonology

Pulmonology focuses on diagnosing and treating lung and breathing problems. Our team provides care from testing to treatment for conditions such as asthma, COPD and sleep apnea.

Pulmonology is the branch of medicine focused on diagnosing and caring for diseases of the lungs and respiratory system. At TidalHealth, our pulmonology team cares for individuals with various conditions, including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), bronchiectasis, interstitial lung disease, pulmonary hypertension, pleural disease, recurrent or severe pneumonia, sleep-disordered breathing such as obstructive sleep apnea, lung nodules, suspected lung cancer, and respiratory failure that may require advanced support.

Our specialists provide care in outpatient clinics, hospital wards, and intensive care units. We use a wide range of tools to guide care, such as:

  • Spirometry and full pulmonary function testing
  • Arterial blood gas analysis
  • Chest X-ray and CT imaging
  • Bronchoscopy
  • Sleep studies (polysomnography)
  • Exercise testing

Treatments may include inhaled medicines, pulmonary rehabilitation, bronchoscopic procedures, oxygen therapy, noninvasive ventilation (e.g., CPAP or BiPAP), and, when necessary, help accessing advanced therapies or referrals for surgery or transplant.

Our Approach

Our approach is a team effort. Pulmonologists at TidalHealth work closely with respiratory therapists, specialized nurses, sleep medicine specialists, thoracic surgeons, radiologists, pathologists, physical therapists, and primary care providers to develop care plans that meet each person’s needs. We believe education, support to quit smoking, vaccinations, and ongoing care are vital for helping our patients feel their best, prevent problems, and enjoy a better quality of life.

When should I see a pulmonologist?

It’s a good idea to see a pulmonologist if you have:

  • Persistent cough
  • Unexplained shortness of breath
  • Wheezing that doesn't improve with regular treatment
  • Frequent or severe lung infections
  • Unusual chest X-ray results
  • Trouble sleeping due to pauses in breathing or ongoing daytime sleepiness

If you have a chronic lung disease or need more specialized care, your primary care provider might recommend a visit to our team for further evaluation.

What tests are used in pulmonology?

Common tests performed by TidalHealth pulmonology specialists include:

  • Spirometry and full pulmonary function tests to check lung volumes and airflow
  • Pulse oximetry and arterial blood gas tests to measure oxygen and carbon dioxide levels
  • Chest X-rays and CT scans
  • Bronchoscopy to examine airways or collect samples
  • Sleep studies for suspected sleep apnea
  • Exercise tests to evaluate symptoms during physical activity

How are asthma and COPD treated?

Treatments often involve inhaled medicines such as bronchodilators and corticosteroids, along with education on proper inhaler use. TidalHealth also offers smoking cessation support, recommends important vaccinations, and provides pulmonary rehabilitation when appropriate. For COPD, long-acting inhalers and supplemental oxygen may be used for those with low oxygen levels, along with care plans to help reduce flare-ups. For asthma, the focus is on maintaining control and preventing attacks with a step-by-step medication plan and by helping avoid common triggers.

What is pulmonary rehabilitation and who can it help?

Pulmonary rehabilitation is a structured program that includes supervised exercise, breathing techniques, education, and support for people with chronic lung disease. This program can help improve endurance, reduce symptoms, and make daily activities easier for people with conditions like COPD, interstitial lung disease, pulmonary hypertension, and others who experience shortness of breath with activity.

When is oxygen therapy needed?

Long-term oxygen therapy may be recommended when oxygen levels are consistently low at rest, during sleep, or with activity. TidalHealth uses pulse oximetry or arterial blood gas testing to determine the need. Oxygen therapy can improve quality of life and lower the risk of complications for those who need it.

What should I expect during a bronchoscopy?

During a bronchoscopy, your doctor uses a flexible scope to examine the airways, usually with local anesthesia and sedation. Our team may collect mucus samples or small tissue samples for testing. Most people go home the same day after recovering from sedation. A sore throat or hoarseness may occur temporarily, but serious complications are uncommon.

Can pulmonary conditions be cured?

Some breathing problems, like certain infections or well-controlled asthma, can be reversible or highly treatable. However, other chronic conditions like COPD or many types of interstitial lung disease are not fully curable. Our team can help manage symptoms, slow disease progression, and improve quality of life. Early diagnosis and following recommended treatments can make a significant difference.

When should I seek emergency help?

Get urgent care immediately if you or someone you know experiences:

  • Severe or worsening shortness of breath
  • Chest pain
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Sudden confusion
  • Lips or face turning blue
  • Difficulty speaking in full sentences due to breathlessness

These can be signs of a serious emergency.
