Thoracic Surgery
At TidalHealth, our thoracic surgery team works closely with your physician to provide surgical care that is both effective and personal. We use advanced techniques, including minimally invasive and robotic-assisted surgery, to help reduce pain and speed up your recovery so you can return home sooner.
Many of our thoracic surgeries are performed using the da Vinci Surgical Robot or laparoscopic methods. These options allow for smaller incisions, less discomfort, and a faster return to your daily activities. We are proud that TidalHealth was the first in the region to introduce minimally invasive surgical techniques and robotic surgery. Our specialists have performed thousands of these procedures, bringing the latest equipment and experience to your care.
When you come to us for thoracic surgery, you can expect a warm and caring environment. Our staff is focused on making your experience as comfortable and positive as possible. We take the time to answer your questions and explain every step so you feel at ease before, during, and after your surgery.
What to Expect

How do I prepare for thoracic surgery at TidalHealth?
Your physician will review the procedure, along with its risks and benefits, and answer your questions. Before surgery, you will also complete a pre-anesthesia questionnaire, which a nurse will review with you a few days before your operation. Please share any health concerns, allergies, or medications you are taking so we can keep you safe and comfortable.
What happens on the day of surgery?
When you arrive, a staff member will help you get settled and ready. A nurse will review your medical history and start an IV. Your surgeon, anesthesiologist, and nurse anesthetist will meet with you before the procedure and make sure your questions are answered. You will be asked to wear an ID band and may be asked some questions more than once for your safety.
What should I bring on the day of surgery?
- Two forms of identification, including a photo ID
- Your health insurance cards
- Wear comfortable clothing that is easy to put on after surgery
- Do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before, unless told otherwise by your care team. Avoid wearing jewelry, makeup, or nail polish, and do not bring valuables with you.
What should I expect after thoracic surgery?
After your surgery, you will spend some time in the recovery area while our team monitors your blood pressure, pain level, and overall comfort. We will go over your home care instructions with you and a family member or friend, making sure you feel ready and supported before you leave.
Can I drive myself home after surgery?
You should not drive yourself home after surgery. You will need to arrange for a responsible adult to take you home and stay with you for at least 24 hours. Please do not operate heavy machinery, make important decisions, or drink alcohol for 24 hours after your procedure.
