Application Process 

To begin your application, please complete our application TidalHealth Observership Request and review the criteria for consideration.

In order to provide the best learning environment, observation opportunities have been limited to two weeks.

Once you have been approved and we are successful in locating a provider in your area of interest, you will be contacted to move forward.

Applying for a Preceptorship

Our program works to provide quality clinical experiences to Undergraduate Medical and Advanced Practice professionals through educational participation in a rural setting. Our versatile pedagogy aims to enhance the quality of patient experience and promote adverse clinical outcomes. We bring our hearts to work and show we care.  Motivated candidates are encouraged to apply to continue their learning in a clinical environment. We receive many requests from students seeking clinical rotations with TidalHealth entities throughout our service network that include TidalHealth Nanticoke, Your Docs In, and TidalHealth Primary & Specialty Care.

Important things to note when applying:

• Applications must be received 90 days before your anticipated start date. (Please leave bold)
• Acceptances are based on availability and reflect the capacity to which the department can support the clinical rotation.
• Please refrain from contacting the providers directly.
• Failure to complete all prerequisites correctly by the due date will result in forfeiting/cancellation of your rotation at TidalHealth. (Please leave bold)

To maximize the accuracy of placement, please complete our application Preceptorship Request Form to the best of your ability with the most information.

Once your request is reviewed by the department staff, our office will reach out with further instructions for clearance. In ordered to be cleared for a rotation, the following documents are required.

Once you receive our confirmation your request has been approved, you will have two weeks to upload the necessary documents, listed above, to be cleared for your desired rotation. During this time, requestors should gather necessary documents as the documents are time sensitive requirements and require your commitment to complete in a timely manner.

Sub-Internship Rotations (Sub-I)

A sub-internship is a clinical rotation for a fourth-year medical student in the United States medical education system. The rotation is generally pursued in the field appropriate to career interest; i.e. pediatrics, surgery, Internal Medicine.

Katherine Layton, MD
Medical Director
Undergraduate Medical Education

Katherine Layton grew up in Salisbury, Md., and graduated from James M. Bennett High School. She graduated from Gettysburg College with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and attended the University of Maryland School of Medicine. She completed her pediatric residency, including a year as chief resident at the University of Michigan. After several years as a UM faculty member, she and her family returned to the Eastern Shore. Dr. Layton is board-certified in pediatrics and pediatric hospital medicine. She has worked as a pediatric hospitalist at TidalHealth Peninsula Regional since 2003 and enjoys teaching students from various disciplines.

Kim Oliver-Hamilton
Coordinator
Undergraduate Medical Education & Continuing Medical Education

Kim Oliver-Hamilton is TidalHealth’s coordinator of undergraduate medical education and continuing medical education.

She was born and raised in New York, NY. She is a first-generation college graduate with a bachelor's degree in English Literature from Skidmore College. After completing college, she started a tutoring service and later began her career in the medical field in 2021 as registrar and continued to be the team leader of the administrative staff.

Oliver-Hamilton supports medical student rotations at TidalHealth and coordinates continuing medical education approvals for the health system.
