Instructions 24-hour pH study for patients of TidalHealth Gastroenterology in Salisbury
Your doctor has ordered for you a 24-hour pH study, which records the acid exposure in the esophagus (swallowing tube) for a 24-hour period. This test will help your doctor offer you the best plan of care.
The procedure is performed by a Registered Nurse and interpreted by a Gastroenterologist.
After numbing your nose and throat, a small catheter (tube) will be positioned in your esophagus and connected to a small recording device that you will wear around your waist. Once the catheter is in place, please remain active and proceed with your normal daily activities as much as possible.
We will ask you to keep a diary of your activities, meals, your symptoms and any medication that you take. You will return the next day to have the catheter removed and the information from the recorder will be sent to your doctor.
Complications are very rare but some side effects such as a sore throat, nasal drip or bloody nose may occur. Chloroseptic spray (not lozenges) can be used during the test to aid in relief of a sore throat.
Preparation
- Do not eat or drink for 6 hours before the test. You will be able to eat your regular diet after the catheter is in place.
- Wear comfortable clothes with a button down shirt.
- Do not shower once the catheter is in place to avoid getting the recorder wet. It is a very expensive piece of equipment and you will be responsible to protect it from any damage. If it is not returned, it will be billed to your account.
- Please follow your doctor’s instructions about medication (antacid) usage.
- If you take Reglan or Carafate you must stop taking them 3 days before test.
Specific instructions regarding medication and your appointment time will be given to you by the office. If you have any questions or concerns, please call 410-543-7040.
